To study medical, biological and social factors influencing the development of dental diseases among girls of different ages, 898 women were interviewed about their childhood years. The women were divided into 6 groups. Group 1 comprised women born in the 1930s (n=116), group 2 included those born in the 1940s (n=101), group 3 – in the 1950s (n=142), group 4 – in the 1960s (n=205), group 5 in the 1970s (n=121), group 6 in the 1980s (n=214). To assess women’s dietary habits, we used an original questionnaire containing 50 questions on social and hygienic aspects of their lifestyle. The results showed that in all groups women preferred slow-dissolving sweets, such as caramels and hard candies, which are highly cariogenic. The lowest cariogenic potential indices were in groups 2 and 3 who used to eat sweets in small quantities, and the sweets were of plant origin. Women in groups 4 and 5 were reported to have a sweet tooth. In group 6 women reported on reducing the amount of sweet treats.
